Our History

Lake Middle School, formerly known as Lake Junior High School, has been described as a "jewel, superbly set."  Designed by noted Denver architects Merrill and Burnham Hoyt, The architects style is labeled "eclectic", with the school patterned after the baronial home of a nobleman. It features elaborate exterior brickwork, soaring Tudor towers with Moslem influences, Tudor arches, parapets, and octagonal motifs.

It has been reported that the current site of Lake Middle School was once the indigenous people`s dancing ground. One author claims that the last scalp dance was held here. Therefore, the ground would be considered sacred ground. Also, it has been reported that the indigenous people held horse races nearby because of the presence of sandy soil.

The purchase of the first real estate for the new lake building was made on November 29, 1922. The contract for the building of Lake Junior High School was given on September 15 ,1924 to construction. It was completed at a cost of $830,000.00 and was opened September 8,1926. The cost of equipping the building was $60,000.00.
