BeaconsSince 1996, Denver Public Schools’ Department of Community Education, in conjunction with many other community partners, has been facilitating the creation and implementation of school-based out-of-school time programs across the city. The Department of Community Education (DCE) and its partners work to coordinate their efforts so they can achieve their vision of offering quality school-based services in every elementary and middle school. The DCE serves as the advocate, resource, and guide for the 19 school-based after-school program sites, that currently exist throughout the Denver Public School district, including Lake Middle School. The Beacons program at LMS offers academic assistance, enrichment and recreational activities, technology training and life skills classes during the out-of-school time hours for every child who wants or needs them. The program also offers adult classes such as ESL, GED, cooking and computer literacy. The LMS site serves between 30 to 50 youth and adults per day. |
